Congressman Peter Roskam

February 5, 2010 –
U.S. Congressman Peter Roskam (R-IL) guest-lectures to two political science classes at Knox.

On February 5, 2010, Congressman Peter Roskam (R-IL) guest lectured at Knox College as part of an IDF-supported event. Congressman Roskam spoke to students in the American National Government and the Religion and Politics classes. Following the lectures, Congressman Roskam addressed a luncheon attended by IDF members and supporters, Galesburg-area elected officials and community leaders, as well as Knox College students, faculty, and administrators.

After one of his talks, a Knox student told Congressman Roskam, “We’re all young, we’re all liberal, we all think we’re right . . . but you’ve challenged me to think differently about some things today.” That is what IDF is all about!

Joel Pollak

October 22, 2009 –
Joel Pollak, author and U.S. Congressional candidate (R-IL), speaks at Knox.

Joel B. Pollak, author and candidate for Congress for Illinois's ninth congressional district, spoke to Knox students on October 22, 2009 about the challenge of education in the post-communist era. Mr. Pollak's presentation focused on the need to teach new generations about the evils of communism and the danger of forgetting communism's horrific legacy.

Mr. Pollak poignantly stated:

"What disturbs me even more than our conflicts over the role of government is our apparent lack of faith in freedom itself. We don’t trust our entrepreneurs to create jobs. We don’t trust democracy enough to defend it in the streets of Tehran. We don’t trust our values to guide us forward through difficult times. Instead of strengthening individuals in general, we have placed our trust in one individual in particular [Barak Obama] whom many saw as extraordinary, as the embodiment of all that we are and hope for as a nation. Today, we are struggling with the burden of those expectations, and the immense power we have placed at his disposal."

David Horowitz

April 6, 2009 –
David Horowitz, noted author and conservative activist, speaks at Knox.

On April 6, 2009, IDF achieved a significant milestone by hosting its inaugural event at Knox College. The event, co-sponsored by IDF, the Knox College Republicans, and the Young America’s Foundation, featured David Horowitz.  Mr. Horowitz, a nationally known author, commentator, and speaker, spoke to over 250 students, professors, and community members in Kresge Recital Hall about his new book, “How Radical Professors at America's Top Colleges Indoctrinate Students and Undermine Our Democracy.”

The following letter was received from Kelly Walsh (Knox Class 2010) regarding the David Horowitz event:

“I just wanted to thank you so much for everything! [Y]our opening remarks were great and Horowitz - as always entertaining and witty! Thank you for making this happen!!

I grew up in a household where my parents had two very clear rules: (1) Always think for ourselves; (2) Always evaluate the pros and cons of the other dimensions of an argument before articulating your thoughts. Well, I have spent the past three years outside of the classrooms at Knox arguing with students who fail at attempting neither and resorting to name calling. I went from the premise of  'a lot of students are idiots,' to realizing a lot of students don't know any better.

It is speakers like Horowitz that plant that little seed for true "open-minded" liberals or students who aren't aware of their ideology/ don't spend much time thinking about it. This was hands down the highlight of my academic career as a student at Knox College! Intellectual diversity is such a fundamental issue that needs to be addressed and I am very grateful we have Knox alums who are still so concerned and proactive about helping students who are marginalized on campus.”
